Samurai Calibur (サムライ・キャリバー, Samurai Kyaribā) is the grinchy member of the Neon Genesis Junior High Students, a covert group of Hyper Agents accessed as Gridman's Assist Weapons in the SSSS.GRIDMAN series.
While posing as human, Calibur usually sticks arounds Rikka Takarada as her bodyguard. In emergency situations, Calibur accesses himself into his Assist Weapon form, the Gridman Calibur (グリッドマンキャリバー).
Appearance
In human form, he's hunchbacked. He has medium-long black hair that covers up some of his face, with part sticking up on top. His eyes are blue, and he has some stubble.
He wears a grey shirt with a loose black tie that's clipped to his shirt lower down. His black jacket has a purplish mark on its left side, and he wears black pants and shoes. He keeps four katana on him.
Personality
Samurai Calibur seems quirky and eccentric, bumping into doors with his katana and navigating through the city weirdly; walking on roofs and jumping off staircases. He has a stutter at the beginning of his sentences, although he loses it when being more serious. He also isn't the type to explain himself much.
Compared to his fellow Neon Genesis Junior High Students members, he is shown to be socially awkward, blatantly barging into every room in a karaoke bar, which prompted Yuta Hibiki to stop him to avoid unwanted attention. Because of his unsettling appearance, Yuta at times worried that he would attract unwanted attention.
He is also a considerate person, getting Rikka tea after hearing that she can't have carbonated drinks and listening to her troubles.
Abilities
Despite appearing human/Repli-Compoid, Calibur displays superhuman attributes and exceptional combat abilities in regular human form like his fellow NGJHS members, thus endowed with the following.
- Superhuman Physiology: Despite his unassuming appearance, Calibur is much stronger, faster, and more resilient than ordinary human, able to carry the Gridman Alliance all at once while jumping through buildings on ease, react and slice up a piece of falling building to protect Yuta and the others, and fighting Anti in their respective human forms for extensive period of time.
- Supreme Combatant: Calibur is also a formidable and swordsman through the use of his four (originally five) swords, able to keep up and eventually overpowered Anti on his own in combat.
- Computer Skills: Calibur has displayed some computer skills, and able to quickly modify Junk to optimize Gridman. This seemed to be basic skills that he and his fellow NGJHS possesses as a Hyper Agent, as Vit, Borr, and Max shown worked together fixing Junk after Akane damaged it by overturning the computer.
- Samurai Calibur Blades: The four swords on Calibur's back, each sharp enough to cut through steel. Though its appearance suggested that the weapon might be modelled after the Japanese Chokuto, upon unsheathed, its blade quickly assumes a broad, jagged form perfect for both cutting and shredding through enemy weapons and/or armor. The weapon also was shown very durable, as it received little to no damage against Anti's circular saw.
Access Mode
In times of need, Calibur shouts his Assist Weapon name, "Gridman Calibur" as his morphing Access Code through the Junk. With the latter's consciousness inside the spherical green gem of the hilt, Calibur supports its wielder being able to switch between sword and axe modes depending on the battle or formation. His default theme is a sword with a black handle with a yellow pommel but can change his body palette that adapts to whoever wields him:
- Powered Axe (パワードアックス): Calibur's Axe mode when wielded by Powered Zenon
- Gridknight Calibur (グリッドナイトキャリバー): When wielded by Gridknight, Calibur's body assumes a black and red coloration.
Signature Moves
- Grid Calibur End (グリッドキャリバーエンド): A finishing move when wielded by Gridman that involves entrapping the target in a special dimension before boosting towards the target with his thrusters and slicing it into half.
- Knight Calibur End (ナイトキャリバーエンド): Anti's version of Grid Calibur End that performed in similar manner with him as Gridknight while holding Calibur in reverse grip.
- Grid Full Power Finish (グリッドフルパワーフィニッシュ): A finisher when wielded by Full-Powered Gridman as he delivers an energized slash upon the target after full charge.
- Jumbo Saber Slash (ジャンボセイバースラッシュ): A finisher when wielded by Powered Zenon in Axe Mode where he cleaves the opponent into half with an energized slash.
Trivia
- Before later confirmed to be one of Gridman's splintered fragments, it was theorized that Calibur may represent Gridman's memories pertaining Gridman Sword hence his transformation.
- His character design and forms may be a reference to:
- Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad: While being the Gridman Universe counterpart to the Samurai Sword, his initials S.C are the same as Sam Collins, the wielder and Servo's identity. His name, SAMurai Calibur, may also be a tribute however he was drawn based on the current appearance of Masaya Obi, the actor of Naota Sho, making him a fused incarnation of both of the main protagonists.
- Transformers Age of Extinction: The purple mark on his coat may be a reference to the shoulder from the dinobot, Slug’s robot mode.
- The Sun Brave Fighbird: The Grid Calibur End is a frame-by-frame usage from Armed Fighbird's Flame Sword charge up motion. Prior to that, his sword point stance is a trace towards the usual Brave perspective from mecha anime by Masami Obari and SUNRISE.
